NAACP President Speaks Out on Charter Schools

by Education Week Video

The NAACP is not backing away from its controversial vote calling for a moratorium on new charter schools. Leaders of the nation’s oldest civil rights organization passed that resolution in October and its charter task force is now holding public meetings around the country to fine-tune recommendations. The NAACP move has created a rift in the African-American community, with many black parents pushing back. They argue charter schools offer a choice in districts where traditional public schools have failed children of color. We spoke with NAACP President Cornell William Brooks on the group’s position and on the incoming Trump administration, which is expected to champion charters and other types of school choice.
